Using multiple choice questions in the classroom.
One of the most obvious pros of multiple-choice questions is that the actual answer is visible. Seeing it could well trigger a student’s memory and enable them to give a correct answer if it’s eluding them. Also, more of them can be posed in a test.
One way of using multiple choice questions is as an aid to knowledge recall.
On too many multiple-choice tests, the questions do nothing more than assess whether students have memorized certain facts and details. But well-written questions can move students to higher-order thinking, such as application, integration, and evaluation. SAT questions illustrate how thought-provoking a multiple-choice question can be.
The students were asked to write 4 questions each week, 2 factual (e.g., a definition or evidence-based prediction) and 2 applied (e.g., scenario-type). For the first two weeks they wrote just one plausible distractor (I provided the question stem, the correct answer, and 2 plausible distractors).
Multiple choice question tests (MCQ tests) can be useful for formative assessment and to stimulate students' active and self-managed learning. They improve students' learning performance and their perceptions of the quality of their learning experience (see Velan et al., 2008).

Multiple-answer questions are structured similarly to multiple-choice questions, except that they allow students to choose more than one correct answer. Multiple-answer questions tend to be easier to write (because you do not have to come up with as many distractors) and more challenging for students to answer (because they cannot rely on process of elimination to find the right answer).

For example, Susan Brookhart, in her book, How to Design Questions and Tasks to Assess Student Thinking, provides a comparison of two multiple choice items, one that is more basic, and one that is at an increased level of rigor.
